But I need some plywood or similar pieces, slim, not too large. I haven’t had access to a means of transport to places such as b&q or homebase to see what they have to offer.

My idea is a sort of half cube, standing up on one corner, and throwing, pouring, streaming paints and inks onto and down the slopes of each side, meeting in the middle corner, it may come out utter trash, but I really like this idea. It involves both Entropy and gravity, things I have been thinking about incorporating into my work for a while.

I can gather the materials, and prime the wood, but the thing is I don’t have the space to do things like this at my home, I won’t be able to at my halls and so I would have to wait until back at Uni, until I have a studio space again with which I can freely pursue my ideas. This summer I have felt trapped from doing real work and so have been stuck with doing just my illustrations, which is fine, I enjoy doing them, but I would greatly appreciate the pursuing of more sculptural/installation pieces.

Books.

I was given some cool books on the galaxy by my brother, books that used to take up space in his room now liberate my drawers.

In honesty I mainly admire the pictures and diagrams, don’t tend to read them word for word.

Really am thinking of re-visiting doing work on the galaxy, entropy and the sorts, there is just so much more to do with it.

Problem is what can I do with it? It’s the only direction or idea apart from my illustrations that I have for now. Need to start brainstorming i think.

Earth, Jupiter and Venus from the skyline of Mars! I find it...

Earth, Jupiter and Venus from the skyline of Mars!

I find it crazy and incredible how much humanity is able to achieve. I mean, this is a photograph of our planet, from another planet.

I think I’d like to go back to creating work inspired by our galaxy, space, gravity, entropy and the likes.

So on my break in work I got bored, I pulled some random pieces...

So on my break in work I got bored, I pulled some random pieces of cardboard out of the recycling bin and began drawing a couple of little quick 5 minute illustrations.

Alderley Edge.

Went to Alderley Edge recently. Well it didn’t really work out as people didn’t bother to take any, a few did but it still left me with about 23 eyes spare. I needed to do something with them. I started thinking of what I could do with them, hide them in various places as I had been doing? No I wanted them to be together in the same vicinity. A mud mound? Maybe, depending on if I ever found one easily hidden for no one to spot me, then it dawned on me, I wanted them in the ground. Now all I needed was where to do it. I consulted a friend from my Foundation degree and both he and my girlfriend offered to help me find a spot and help me ‘Plant’ my eyes. We went to a place near my friends house called ‘Sankey Valley’ and found a remote small woodland bit, deep in the woods of the trees we found a small ‘Island’ I suppose, seeing as it was surrounded by water other then the small part we entered from, I cleared a space on the ground and together with my friend and girlfriend we started digging holes with twigs, our fingers, anything we could use, the ground was moist, damp from either rain or the water near by so it was easy to dig the holes, one by one we started planting the eyes into the ground. I then documented the space and left, intending not to return, I liked the idea of not knowing what would happen to them.

The next few posts may not entirely be in order of when the works were done.

This was me experimenting on a spare piece of cardboard with my brothers spray paints, I have never used them before. When he came back from Uni he gave me his box of various types of Spray paints as he no longer had any use for them, I gladly accepted and decided to play with them, there was no planning to this piece, it was very on the spot, just playing around with what I could do with the paints really. I enjoy it though, lots of fun.

I miss doing things like this, BTEC Art, Environment project,...

I miss doing things like this, BTEC Art, Environment project, someone did a cube made of twigs compressed together with clamps for their final piece, and they poured bitumens onto it. After the project it was lying around for ages and in the summer when clearing out our work we decided to get rid of it in a more interesting way then to simply throw it out, a group of us went to an old industrial site that isn’t in use, found a nice spot in some trees and as it went dark we set it alight, it burnt magnificently, as you can see in the first picture, we wore protective masks as the flames and smoke from the bitumens was toxic. This was not for the project i must stress. We literally just wanted to see what would happen to the cube. It’d been raining that morning so the grass was still wet meaning there was no danger of a fire starting in the woods.

I really need to start putting my ideas for work over the summer to good use.

I have the last of my polystyrene eyes to use up. Need to do something with those.

Here is a link to my Illustrations and other art i’ve done...

Here is a link to my Illustrations and other art i’ve done in the past including from foundation.

I love it, i think it’s great and can’t see what else i would have liked to do, but that’s what i do, always settle for the way things go. This is the Text that i decided to put on foamboard alongside the piece:

The basis of my work is to identify, acknowledge and document the ways in which humanity uses the environment that they claim to be theirs, the economy that encourages consumption, and therefore litter and the dwindling resources that are the inevitable outcome.

I like the reflections, and actually prefer the gaps at the sides, allowing people to duck down to look into the mirrors, seeing themselves in the piece itself, making them sort of performers for it.

As i could not get it back to the ADA building when it was time to take it down i decided to Donate it to one of the staff at Metal who felt she would have a use for it at some point. I’d rather it get recycled then thrown away.

Setting up at Metal.

We were due to put up our show on March the 19th early in the morning, Neil helped me to get it in a taxi from the ADA building to Metal.

Once there i found a perfect free spot upstairs right in front of the window, positioning the plinth so that when you walked in through the doorway you could see the upside down triangle and so that there was enough space to walk all the way around i got to work on sticking the mirrors in.

Mirrors are incredibly difficult, i could not find any the exact size and so settled for some smaller then the space, saving me from having to try and cut them down to size, which i know would have been disastrous. But upon opening my bag with the mirrors in i noticed one had smashed; Never mind. I measured up the gaps and stuck in the other two which were undamaged using no more nails. I then went across the road from the train station to a patch of grass and not so sneakily acquired a perfect triangle to fit in the middle.

I measured a triangle and marked it off with three nearby twigs. As i did not have a spade i had to use my hands and scissors to try and pry it up, i ended up just taking it up in bits, shoving it in a bag and swiftly leaving before anyone said anything, there were probably better ways of getting grass, but i just wanted to get it over and done with.

This is the imprint now left in the patch of grass, i find it funny that people will walk past and wonder ‘What the hell is with that?’

So i placed the grass triangle into the base, a perfect fit and went back on the Tuesday with a spare mirror and glued it in. Complete at last.

.

I needed to decide what would go into the middle of the base, what would i want to be reflected an infinate amount of times?

I talked with Neil about a number of possibilities, litter and rubbish was one, covered in some kind of oil or tar, maybe bitumens. But decided against it as i thought it would be too messy.

Besides i wanted something more organic and so started thinking about maybe putting grass into the middle, turf or something with which could be bounced back, the way the earth should be, covered by greenery.

Half way there.

This is the piece cut out and glued together, the edges were all cut on angles to make the triangle flush.

The work had to be done by the technician as i had not had an induction, and so i just stood around instructing him on what to do.

Those are the rails setting in for the base to be nailed onto.

This is me stood next to the plinth for a sense of scale. It measures at 3.5ft high and 2ft each side. This is the plinth completed with the top lowered and nailed about half a foot down. I am very pleased with how it turned out, i know it looks simple but that was the look i was going for.

The plans.

Here are some plans of what i wanted to build, excuse the rough sketches and maybe blurred writing but i had troubles with my scanner so had to take photographs of the sketches.

Anyway for the most part this was easily planned, i went down and spoke to the technician about making it, and he assured me it’d be an easy task with his help, we talked about sizes and cost and once i bought the wood we got to work.

Enter Shikari.

Their newest Album ‘A flash flood of colour’ is striking to me, it’s themes and ideas are actually partly where i got my own ideas from, and in fact they led me to Zeitgeist.

Here is an image from the albums booklet.

It represent the hierarchy triangle, but flipped upside down, a signal that things need to be changed, a notion that the things at the bottom are usually the things that need to be at the top. It’s simple and i think it works greatly due to that fact.

I started thinking, mirrors have been a part of my project, one of the themes, but i wouldn’t really have a chance to explore it too well, then this whole Metal thing came around, where we’d be able to show some of our work, put up our own exhibiton, and i thought, that whilst my tree men would work great printed out on a large scale, or simply painted on a large scale, well i thought what’s the point in coming all that way to see that? You could just look them up on this blog. I prefer making installations for people to see, 3D objects or creations, i feel they’re just better. I started thinking about creating a sculpture using mirrors, a triangle set, would work just as well as my square one i attempted previously.

So...

About a month and a half ago we had a meal at Metal art gallery, and then the following week we were invited back to give a presentation on our project so far and what we were thinking about doing. Sort of like an easy going Dragon’s den, Jenny, the curator of Metal was listening to our presentations. she seemed impressed.

I thought mine went much better then the crappy one i had done at the Assessment point, but i learnt from that and improved up on it greatly for this one.

Anyway, basically we were invited to put up some work towards the end of march.

I know this is a very late update but meh, i’ve been busy, and my work and ideas come first, Blog later once work’s out of the way.

(As of this post the work has been made, put up and taken down)

Operation: Mirror Box.

The picture quality on this isn’t so hot but you get the gist.

A box…made of mirrors, 4 inward facing, so that when an object is placed in the middle it’d be reflected an infinate amount of times. I’d actually thought this up way back when the Higgs was still apart of my project, i only recently decided to do it.

Yet again it was extremely difficult to find the materials, in this case the mirrors, which frustrated me to no end, simply because i knew how easy it would be to put together. So anyway from asking around a reliable source gave me the idea of going to places like Morrisons to find small bathroom tiled mirrors, and after a couple of weeks searching around liverpool to no avail, i decided to give morrisons a quick trip when i went home for the weekend, and lo and behold, straight away i found them in the home department, perfect size and everything, i then found a small base at Hobby craft with which to place them on.

The object i had chosen to put in the middle was some litter, so i picked up a crisp packet from off the streets and after making the box, it was scrunched up and placed in the middle. I found the piece quite difficult to photograph in all honesty and feel it is more powerful in person rather then seeing a few photographs, but anyway here it is:

And for the record it was taped up using Duct Tape.

Dan Graham.

Found this artist when researching mirror art, Dan graham, found out he uses mirrors a lot in his work, sometimes indoors, sometimes outdoors, this piece up their is particularly striking for me, i love mountains, something elegant and monumental about them.
